Define the areas, individuals or species that you want to assess for mycorrhiza formation. Roots can be excavated with a small soil corer (for putting greens and tee boxes) or a small shovel. Only a small volume of root-containing soil is needed (half the volume of a golf ball), but the roots need to be terminal feeder roots. Place soil + root samples in an unsealed plastic bag to prevent rotting or drying during shipping. Label samples individually and indicate your goals for the assessment. Mycorrhizal colonization can be very localized; several small samples will enable you to identify areas where inoculum is needed or test inoculum performance better than a single, large sample.
Soil or Inoculum
Define the field to be assessed for spore numbers. Place about a cup of soil (250 ml) in an unsealed plastic bag to prevent anaerobic conditions. Label your samples individually and indicate your goals for the assessment.
If you want spore counts for a particular commercial inoculum, send us at least a cup of the inoculum (250 ml) in a sealed bag and properly labeled.
